The novel is set during the cold war, characters in the story undergo terrible treatment as they are in the red army prisoners camp. It is this camp where they work every day, and are starved to death. Quotations from the novel can show the impact of abuse on characters "You serve the working people, but what are you, you bastard?"Pg 101, and "Gang 82, who'd been digging holes in the open" Pg 86. These quotes shows the low treatment the red army has towards the prisoners. Another quote shows the level of discipline characters undergo, "How hard it was to begin the work day in such freezing cold" Pg 62. |
Organizations such as unhcr, Canadian UN, and Un human rights protection would help those suffering from human rights abuses in the novel. This would not only solve human rights abuses, but also rescue the prisoners of war.
