Blogs: Wurthering Heights
While reading the story of wuthering heights I found myself seeing that the character heathcliff wasn’t entirely despicable, and infact the actions depicted was the effect of his broken nature. In the beginning Heathcliff didn’t have the greatest childhood, he was made fun of and beaten. He kept all of his pain locked away ever since he was a kid, this has a cause and effect to heathcliff in what he is about to become later on in the story. Heathcliff always had a relationship with Catherine even at a young age, they show an unbreakable bond with their affection towards one another being strong. As time progressed, Edgar starts falling in love with Catherine, making Heathcliff pushed aside. This not only causes more hatred and anger in Heathcliff, but also causes Heathcliff to take action to get revenge. After Heathcliff left Catherine, he arrives rich and well dressed. His action was to purposefully show off his wealth to Catherine and Edgar, making Catherine want Heathcliff more than Edgar. Soon after she eventually departs from Edgar just be with Heathcliff. And Heathcliff knowing that she’s no longer with Edgar, he goes and marries another woman, this was all but revenge, a direct action to make Catherine’s sorrow. This shows that heathcliff was trying to make Catherine suffer as he did in a vengeful way. When Catherine passed away, Heathcliff was even more broken and felt regret in things he has done. In conclusion Heathcliff wasn’t a despicable character because he was simply broken from the beginning, he was treated with hatred and rejection until he made his wealth. He always loved Catherine but he didn’t realize what damage he would cause by treating her unfairly.
