Individual Film Review: Written response on 12 years a slave
The film that I chose was 12 years a slave by Steve McQueen, this film heavily reflects on the violations of human rights by showing the horrific treatment of other race in the 1800’s. This film shows realism in its superior sets, acting, and story. Many human right violations and can be seen through characters that are against different race. The human rights violated are, Article 4; slavery and the slave trade, Article 3; Everyone has the right to life, Article 5; No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Article 24; Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and holidays with pay. With great use of cinematography these violations can be shown through characters undergoing brutal torture and terrible living conditions. This is tied to the Director wanting to emphasize emotion within the film, making the audience care more about the characters. Characters within the film play a huge role into showing the corrupt and the hopeful. Solomon played by Chiwetel Ejiofor shows hope throughout the entire film. This character literally goes through hell, he is tortured, beaten, mocked, but still remains hopeful in his search for peace. Epps played by Michael Fassbender does an amazing job in wanting to hate the character. The things this character does is absolutely wrong, he trades, sells and tortures real human beings. This was to show how corrupt american’s were at the time, so the director wanted to use the character epps to represent america to show the audience how corrupt they were at the time. In conclusion, this film does a great job of immersing you into american history, with great acting, amazing cinematography, and a fantastic story. After watching the film I was stunned by the amount of impact it had, and to know that this was real history really felt scary because Americans during that time thought it was normal to treat other race brutally. This film sets a high bar for being one the most impactful, emotional, and effective film today.
